Community gathers at Wilchester Elementary to honor Molly DeWitt

At Wilchester Elementary School (WCE), the Butterfly Garden is a place of beauty, reflection and growth. This month, it became something more. It became a symbol of what happens when a community comes together.

Students, staff, family members and neighbors gathered to dedicate a memorial bench in honor of Molly DeWitt, who was tragically lost in the Texas Hill Country floods. Engraved with the words, “Let your light shine like Molly,” the bench stood at the heart of the ceremony. The moment was both a time of remembrance and a powerful reflection of who we are as a district and as a community.

In Spring Branch ISD (SBISD), when one of our own hurts, we show up. We support. We stand together.

Mrs. Long’s second grade class, along with Molly’s “forever second grade” classmates, played a meaningful role in the event. The students helped prepare for the dedication, shared reflections and honored Molly in ways that were heartfelt and age-appropriate. They reminded everyone in attendance that even in loss, there is kindness, empathy and hope.

The bench, now permanently placed in the Butterfly Garden, offers a quiet space for students to sit, read, think and remember. Butterflies, long associated with transformation and new life, make the setting especially fitting.

Wilchester Principal Liz Goodman said the gathering reflected the heart of the school community.

“This coming together is part of healing,” Goodman said. “It is about celebrating Molly’s light, the joy she brought to our campus and the love we had for her and still carry with us every day. When we gather like this, we remind one another that Molly will always be part of Wilchester.”

Since Molly’s passing, her family has worked to support her memory through community efforts that reflect her joyful spirit and love for learning. Their strength and generosity have inspired many, and the Wilchester dedication stands as one more example of love turning into action.

The ceremony was simple and sincere. It reflected what SBISD does best. We care for one another. We create spaces where students feel supported. And we ensure that Every Child’s life and legacy matter.

Molly’s memory lives on in the Butterfly Garden, resting among friends and sustained by a community that continues to carry forward the light and love she shared with her classmates and friends.
